I received my Christmas present from DH on Sunday night!  As it was a combined Birthday and Christmas present, and my birthday was last month, DH decided not to wait until Christmas morning to give me my present.

It’s a Nikon D50 SLR camera. I’ve used this style camera before – my parents had me bring one over to the UK when I was there on vacation earlier in the year, so I used it for 3 weeks, and found it a nice, relatively easy to use camera. It’s a step up from my previous camera, which is a point & shoot Nikon, but not quite as large as DH’s camera, which is a Nikon D200. DH bought his camera this past summer, and I’m always too nervous to pick it up – I have a tendency to be kind of clumsy, and I worry that I’m going to drop it (it’s happened before – I dropped a brand new Nikon telephoto lens at the Lincoln Memorial on my first visit to the USA in 1987).

Last night, we went out and bought 2 memory cards, and I wrapped up my old camera in the original box to give to DS for Christmas. We’re reluctant to spend a lot of money for a camera for a six year old, so I’m sure he won’t mind getting a second hand camera. DS has been telling DH that he needs to get me a camera for a couple of months now, because he’s been angling for my old camera. I guess photography just runs in families – my father was a professional photographer, and I’ve always been interested in photography – before the advent of the digital camera, I used to have a really nice Nikon FM2 camera.

In the New Year, I think I’ll be adding a new feature to my blog – I’m hoping to do a weekly photography post!

The family that plays together…

Congrats on the new camera Susan. I think it’s great that you’re giving Ethan your camera. My father was always big on photography and it rubbed off on me in high school. I’ve done the professional thing, went to Nikon school, did wedding photography, taught photography, darkroom work, and decided I could hate it if I did it any longer. So I’m back to being an amateur and loving it. The same could be said for XS I’m sure. My daughter (25) inherited my old digicam a couple years ago for her birthday and now that I know she likes and uses it I think we’ll upgrade it. Be sure to share lots of pics.

[...] The camera was a hit. I think it was his favorite gift. He didn’t guess that it was my old camera (he made a comment to his grandmother that his mom has exactly the same camera…). In addition to the camera, we gave him his first guitar. DH came home from work a few weeks ago with a Fender box. I asked him if he had bought himself another guitar (!). Thankfully, no, it wasn’t for him, but DH had the inspiration to buy DS one for Christmas. I must admit, it was an inspired choice – DH has always wanted to get DS a guitar, and to teach him to play. We just hadn’t discussed it for this Christmas. Still, I can’t complain (and at least it’s not a drum set). It’s a Fender 3/4 size guitar – designed for children ages 6 – 11. [...]
